Minnesota Training Center athletes won three gold medals and four overall at the 2015 Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile on April 24-26.

While the Chilean volcano Calbuco erupted and sent ash into the air, the Minnesota Storm blew into the Chilean capital. The most impressive performances came from freestyler Dustin Schlatter and Greco-Roman standout Joe Rau.

Neither wrestler gave up a point in competition en route to gold medals.

Rau and Pat Smith won Greco-Roman golds on Friday, while high school star Mason Manville went 2-2 and finished fifth, falling in the bronze medal match.

Rau, a 2014 U.S. World Teamer, went 3-0 and earned two technical falls and a fall to win gold at 80kg. Smith, a 2014 World University silver medalist, yielded two points in the tournament, going 4-0 with four technical falls.

Schlatter blitzed the field at 70kg, outscoring his opponents 41-0 in four straight technical fall victories. It was Schlatter’s first Pan American championship.

Zach Sanders finished with a silver medal at 57kg. The returning champion won three straight matches to reach the championship final, but Cuba’s Alfredo Cisneros would beat Sanders 8-2 to claim gold.
