Las Vegas, Nevada -- Minnesota has always been known for its stout upper weights. On Saturday at the U.S. Nationals and Olympic Trials Qualifier at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Scott Schiller and Tony Nelson continued that strong upper-weight tradition by placing in the top seven to earn spots at April’s Olympic Trials.

Schiller, a three-time collegiate All-American at the University of Minnesota, opened up with a tough draw, wrestling top-seeded Dustin Kilgore of Sunkist Kids in the opening round at 97kg. The dangerous Kilgore fell behind early as Schiller hit the Kent State alum for four points and then proceeded to build a 10-4 lead heading into the break.

Kilgore outscored Schiller 6-2 in the second period, but Schiller would prevail 12-10 and move into the quarterfinals where he faced Boise State alum J.T. Felix, who is now representing the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club. Schiller fell behind early, as Felix built a 5-2 lead heading into the second. Schiller would take the lead in the second period with a pair of two-point maneuvers and then finished off the bout with a fall at 4:46.

Schiller kept his torrid streak going with a heart-attack inducing 4-3 win over Micah Burak. Burak scored what appeared to be the match-winning points late, but Schiller earned a one-point reversal as time expired to move into the finals to face Wynn Michalak.

Michalak would prove too much for the upstart Schiller as the Central Michigan alum powered past Schiller 12-4. By virtue of placing in the top seven, Schiller will compete in Iowa City for the chance to earn a spot at the Olympic Games in Rio.

Tony Nelson finished fourth at 125kg and had to navigate the usual minefield of talented American heavyweights. Nelson, seeded second, opened up with a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Minnesota native and two-time Division II champion Matthew Meuleners. The win was crucial as the victory moved Nelson into the semifinals and assured the Cambridge, Minn., native no worse than a sixth-place finish in the draw, good enough to qualify him for Iowa City.

With championship hopes still alive, Nelson would then fall 2-1 to rival Tyrell Fortune of Titan Mercury. Nelson bounced back with a 9-3 win over the University of Wisconsin’s Conner Medbery before falling to longtime Big Ten rival Bobby Telford of Titan Mercury.
