The historic Bill Farrell Memorial Open has been a marquee international tournament in the United States for over 50 years. Located in downtown Manhattan, the New York Athletic Club is usually reserved for New York’s high class elite. However every year, singlets are added to the sport coat minimum dress code, opening its door to showcase some of the best wrestling in the United States and the world.

On March 30th, six of Minnesota Storm’s top Greco prospects will step to the mats of the sixth floor gym overlooking the south side of Central Park. Not only will this tournament provide a good measuring stick for these athletes heading into the U.S. Open at the end of April, it also acts as an early qualifier for the World Team Trials in June. The highest placing American will be able to punch their ticket to Tulsa before the typical U.S. Open qualifier.

Notable athletes to watch for include Joe Rau. The 2014 World Team member at 80 kg, and a 2016 Olympic Trials Champion at 98 kg, is currently ranked #2 at 87 kg, his 4th weight class since joining the Senior level ranks. This will be Joe’s first competition back from a knee injury since the 2017 World Team Trials.

Barrett Stanghill will also be competing in a new weight class for the first time. After winning the U23 World Team Trials at 85 kg last fall, he has decided for drop to the newly added 82 kg weight class. Stanghill commented,“I was pretty close naturally, and I figured I’d give it a shot in New York before the U.S. Open. I’m confident in my abilities at any weight, but overall I think this is the right choice for me.”
